Any mind-altering or mood-influencing substances β including alcohol, cigarettes and medications can inhibit or suppress the work of sacred mushrooms. Ideally, at least for a day or two before the retreat, if possible, medications should be eliminated β or at least reduced β so that the work of the mushrooms is not impeded by the presence of other chemicals. Those who are on anti-depressants should, if possible, discontinue a day or two before and if possible until a day or two after. Because anti-depressants or mood-managing medications suppress strong emotions, they also suppress your instincts, your intuition, and potentially also the work of sacred mushrooms. You should also keep your medical practitioner informed, and work in harmony with his or her advice.
